Bookmaker Margin Calculator: Formula and Example

Calculate bookmaker margin from decimal odds with a worked example, then compare markets without mistaking a low margin for a safe bet.

Bookmaker margin calculator: probability, margin and market — editorial illustration for Odds And Probability

Short answer: Convert every decimal price in one complete market into implied probability, add those probabilities, then subtract 100%. For a three-way market priced at 2.10, 3.40 and 3.60, the total is 104.81%, so the displayed overround is 4.81%. That is a price comparison measure, not a forecast of who will win.

The margin formula

For decimal odds, implied probability is 1 divided by the price. Multiply by 100 to show a percentage. Add the percentages for every mutually exclusive outcome in the same market. The amount above 100% is commonly called the overround or displayed margin. If a two-way market totals 103.2%, its overround is 3.2%. Use all outcomes: leaving out the draw in a football 1X2 market makes the calculation meaningless.

The calculation describes the prices visible at one moment. It does not include every operational cost, promotion, cash-out adjustment or the operator’s realised result. Record the event, market, timestamp and odds format beside the result so a later comparison uses like-for-like inputs.

Worked three-way example

At 2.10, the implied probability is 47.62%. At 3.40 it is 29.41%, and at 3.60 it is 27.78%. Their sum is 104.81%. Subtract 100 and the displayed margin is 4.81%. To estimate a normalized market view, divide each implied probability by 104.81%; that removes the overround proportionally but does not turn the result into a reliable real-world forecast.

Rounding can move the final figure by a few hundredths of a percentage point. Keep at least four decimal places during the calculation and round only the displayed answer. If the market contains many runners, a spreadsheet is safer than mental arithmetic because one omitted or stale price changes the total.

How to compare two markets

Compare the same event, outcome set and timestamp. A match-winner market cannot be compared directly with a draw-no-bet market because the settlement rules and number of outcomes differ. Check whether overtime counts, whether a dead-heat rule applies and whether the prices are live or pre-match. A lower overround can indicate less price friction, but it says nothing by itself about licensing, withdrawals, support or safer-gambling tools.

Price quality also varies by selection. Two markets can have the same total overround while distributing it differently across favourites and outsiders. Anyone doing a serious comparison should retain the individual normalized probabilities, not only the headline percentage.

Limits of the calculator

A margin calculator cannot identify a good bet, prove positive expected value or remove uncertainty. The inputs are market prices, not facts about future performance. Fast-moving prices may be stale by the time the arithmetic is complete. Promotions can make effective terms more complex, while account restrictions or jurisdiction rules are separate checks.

Use the result as a reading aid: understand what is built into a price, compare equivalent markets and decide whether to stop. If the calculation encourages larger stakes or repeated checking after a loss, it is no longer serving an educational purpose. A pre-set money limit remains more important than a small difference in displayed margin.

FAQ

Is overround the same as profit margin?

No. It is a calculation from displayed prices. An operator’s realised result depends on stakes, outcomes, promotions, liabilities and other factors.

What is a low bookmaker margin?

There is no universal threshold that makes a market safe or worthwhile. Compare equivalent markets at the same time and treat the figure only as price friction.

Can I use American or fractional odds?

Yes, but convert every price to decimal or implied probability first. Do not mix formats inside one sum.
